Why RFID?

Costs outweigh benefits. But what does an RFID system actually provide for companies? Why are more and more companies using RFID instead of paper or bar codes?

By checking in and out with your OV chip card (the tag!) the public transport system knows exactly where you were at that moment (which RFID reader). This is the essence of every RFID system. Because the OV chip card uses NFC, the card must be kept close to the RFID pole. With UHF RFID, this is not necessary. The labels of multiple pallets or products can also be read automatically from a few meters away. RFID tags are also unique and, unlike barcodes, cannot be accidentally scanned multiple times, so that the scanned number (stock) is always correct.

“Less administration, fewer errors and less product searching”

RFID Tracking & Tracing

More and more companies are using this functionality to their advantage to automate the entry, checkout and location of inventory. As soon as a pallet of products arrives, it can be scanned automatically in a few seconds. When the pallet or products are subsequently moved, these movements are automatically registered. First, this ensures greater transparency and quality. For products in the “cool chain”, such as vegetables, fruit, flowers and pharma, it is essential to carefully monitor that these products are kept at the correct temperature and that no mistakes are made. With RFID, companies are always aware of the location of their product and can be notified if a product is about to be placed at the wrong temperature. In addition to this quality improvement, companies such as warehousing, transshipment and export companies save time and costs through less administration, fewer errors, and less search for products.

Check orders with RFID

Finally, it is possible to automatically check - and within seconds - that an order is 100% correct before it is sent. This works like this:

  1. Each product, for example a box, has its own unique RFID tag in the shape of a sticker label. The characteristics of the product can also be printed on this.
  2. An order that consists of 120 boxes is picked and stacked on a pallet. This pallet is being prepared for export control.
  3. Instead of manually checking all items or scanning barcodes, the order is selected from a list of orders on the touchscreen. All products in the order appear on the screen. The order is now ready to be scanned.
  4. By driving the order through the RFID order scanner, all products on the pallet are scanned. These are then displayed on the screen. Products that belong on the pallet are green, missing products are yellow and products that do not belong in the order are red. This way, errors can be repaired quickly and you can see at a glance whether the order is ready for transport.
  5. Orders that have been scanned can be found and searchable, so it is always easy to show which products were scanned at what time.
